Filter brushes are an excellent Mechanical Filter Media. It's very effective and very easy to clean. If used carefully, it will last you a long time. Filter brushes should be used as a Mechanical Filter Media (though it can be used at any stage) in the First Chamber of your Filter.
Ideally, the Filter Brush Chamber, should have a 'bottom up' water flow. 'Packing', or how you place your Filter Media in the Filter Chamber is very important to maximise the filtration ability of any media.
Filter Brushes must be packed vertically i.e. straight, by hanging it. The Brushes need not be the entire height of the filter chamber, hanging a few inches from the floor, the bottom of the chamber is fine.
