Lava Stones are porous, lightweight volcanic rock in dark red-brown to charcoal black. The rough surface gives beneficial bacteria somewhere to colonise, so the stones add biological filtration as well as hardscape. They suit freshwater, saltwater, terrariums and paludariums.

Why Choose Lava Stones?

The porous surface gives a large area for bio-filtration. At about 0.9 g/cm³ the stones are light, so they stack into height without loading the glass, and the neutral chemistry leaves pH alone. Shrimp and small fish shelter in the crevices.

Combine with epiphytic plants like moss or Java Fern, or use as a base layer beneath nutrient substrate to add biological filtration.
